Athens Airport, Greece
Sofitel Hotel is the first hospitality pole that visitors will encounter during their visit to Athens, and Greece for that matter, as it is the first of its kind at Athens International Airport.
Elastic Architects’ design objective was to transform the hotel into a place of high aesthetics and warm hospitality, with both Greek and international elements, inspiring both intimacy and elegance.
The central concept of the project derives from a lyrical approach, from Greek Mythology, where symbols were individualized in worship, domestic daily life and craftsmanship as amulets.
Emphasizing the idea of ancient places of worship and expressive symbolism in spatial planning, the idea of multiple centers was reproduced as a synthetic system of nodes, independent but conceptually interconnected through linear perspectives and repeating patterns.
The space is enhanced by strategically chosen materials, textures and furniture, which, combined with the use of natural and artificial light, create a sense of serenity and grandeur. The eclectic palette used, contrasting mild and harsh materials with cool and warm tones, draws the visitor’s attention to the interior.
The project emphasizes the communication and connectivity aspect, introducing a meeting place for hotel guests and a resting point for passers-by. An added value for modern travellers, who are well connected to the internet, is the opportunity to explore design islands throughout the hotel which can be photographed and broadcast on social networks.
Elastic Architects have created a new cosmopolitan centre, combining special materials with a bespoke high end design, offering a luxurious yet intimate proposition, exuding a sense of grandeur.
