Elastic Architects were selected to undertake the revamping of the outdoor pool and restaurant of Mitsis Rinela Beach Resort & Spa, in Kokkini Chani, Crete.

The unobstructed sea views combined with the strong sun over the Cretan landscape, informed the architectural thinking. Functionality and integration of the custom-made furniture to the landscape was of outmost importance to the brief.

The shadows casted by the wicker pergola amplify the natural materials chosen, and offer a constant transmutation of the space throughout the day. In continuity to the restaurant, the outdoor pool follows similar design ideas, highlighting the infinity views to the Aegean Sea.

Design had to serve the needs specified for the restaurant in such a way as to create the conditions for having a summer space, which would meet the requirements of a contemporary hotel unit, both in terms of the number of service personnel and the way the kitchen area would function. The natural landscape commanded respect to the location and led to the use of natural materials. One of the key elements of the study was the play of light and shadow, the view, the naturalness of the materials as well as the natural ventilation. The end result was the attempt at a new interpretation of the term,
“Greekness”.

Particularly, the design of the restaurant hall was divided into four zones, the area of the entrance-reception, the main seating area, the buffet area and auxiliary spaces. For the outdoor area, a pergola-type canopy was chosen, so as to facilitate the flow of air and allow for natural shade. Willow branches of large diameter were used for shading the space so as to not cut off the sun, but create a play of light and shadow, altering space according to time. For its support we used hemp from natural chestnut wood pillars and beams. The hemp that was selected enhances the functionality of the space so that it has the maximum possible free space.

The northern orientation of the restaurant created the need for isolation from the strong wind. Thus, a mobile glass windbreak system was selected and installed perimetrically of the outdoor hall of the restaurant and was integrated into the design of the glass parapet so that it formed a single whole. Windshield mechanisms were retained in the structural elements of the pergola. For the floor, the use of natural cement mortar was selected to optimize simplicity and uniformity.

The entrance of the restaurant is highlighted by vertical dividers made of natural wood chestnut tree, opening to the entrance and reception corridor. This space is the main connection point of the central hall with the kitchen and auxiliary areas. The furniture were designed specifically for the space having natural wood as their main material and accommodating for comfort as well as the overall aesthetics of the space. The hall based on the furniture, was divided into three sections, the area of the main seating, the monastic table and both circular tables. Different types of furniture were selected for the monastery area and in the area with the rotundas, so as to create different qualities and experiences of space.
